A Fabulous Night at the O'Connor Gallery (24 June 1999)

Yesterday was a busy day for me. After running around from meetings and chores and work, I made it to the reception that City Hall was hosting in honour of Lesbian and Gay Pride Week. It started at 5:30. It wasn't very big; only 150 people or so, but it was pleasant.

There were a number of TNT!MEN members there, and some people I haven't seen for years, since my Lesbian and Gay Youth of Toronto days. One of them, Serge, had heard about TNT!MEN, but had never yet attended an event. I had a few caledars of events with me, so I gave him one, and invited him to join us that evening at the O'Connor. After a bit of indecision and trepidation, he finally gave in and agreed to come.

I told him it would be a fairly quiet, pleasant event, with maybe 20 or so men. I was wrong: we had over 50! There were a lot of new faces, too; men visiting from out of town, and some locals who decided to finally come out and see what we are all about. Given the noise they were making, it was pretty obvious that people were having a great time.

The new location of the O'Connor gallery, on Maitland just east of Church, is really nice. It's a big space, and has a nice back patio which unfortunately was a little too exposed for us to use. The art by Mark Reid was delightful; if you have a chance, go see the show.

We had a lovely time; many thanks to our generous patron and host Dennis O'Connor. And remember, TNT!MEN members get a 15% discount on custom framing!
