Protecting Your Right to Privacy (20 August 1999)

This is from a press release I received from the June 13 Committee about the June arrests at the Bijou in Toronto. Since it involves the very definition of privacy, I felt it important to share it with you.

Drop the Charges! Stop the Raids!

Those of us in the Toronto region are very familiar with the series of arrests starting on June 13, 1999, at the Bijou, a gay club in Toronto. While some dismiss these arrests as isolated incidents (despite happening on four separate occassions), others are concerned that our right to privacy is being systematically violated.

After several community meetings involving hundreds of people, the "June 13 Committee" was formed. They intend to defend our rights by making the public more aware of how much money is being wasted investigating and prosecuting victim-less "crimes". (How can being extremely nice to someone be considered illegal anyway?)

The June 13 Committee is also working to have the antiquated catch-all "bawdy house" laws repealed. This will make ALL gay spaces that much more secure, more welcoming, and enjoyable for us all.

These issues affect all gay people, regardless of which bars they do or do not visit. Our rights are being violated, our private spaces are being invaded. If you are concerned about these issues, please visit the June 13 Committee web page.
