Wal-Mart Censors Toronto Parade (24 Nov 1999)

My friend Tom from Boston sent me this bit from today's Boston Globe:

Wal-Mart's Secret Policy

Q. My family and I took pictures of a parade while in Toronto recently. Although there were some scantily clad people in the parade, there was nothing sexual about any of them. Wal-Mart refused to develop some of the pictures, saying they were unsuitable. I asked for a copy of the photo processing guidelines, but was told it was not the store's policy to provide these guidelines to customers. I feel awkward that Wal-Mart is screening photographs without letting us know what its standards are. Does the store have the right to do this? D.M., Rhode Island

A. Jessica Moser, Wal-Mart spokeswoman, said she feels the store has the right to set and adhere to its photo development policy, which states that the company will not develop any photographs displaying nudity nor the male or female body in a state of undress inappropriate to be seen on a public street in most areas of this country. In the case where photographs are questionable, the store will return the negatives with a statement that reads: "We are returning your processed negatives without certain prints. We have established guidelines in our 1-hour photo labs prohibiting us from printing those negatives which we have classified as unsuitable. We regret any inconvenience this may have caused you and trust you will understand our position."
