Global Coverage of our Pride Nudity Victory! (Sep 26, 2002)

Thanks to hard work by board member and legal genius Peter Simm, we've managed to get the story of our victory regarding nudity at Pride onto television, radio, newspapers and maagazines around the world! One of my friends heard Regis and Kelly telling their audience of our victory on Sep 24, and we got a very loud cheer. Another told me the story made it onto an Australian youth radio station.

The first item to appear in the press was a story in the National Post. While there are a number of important errors and omissions in the story, it essetially covers the facts.

The biggest problem with that first article, and all the articles that follow, is the focus: the press seems to be delighted with the fact that wearing shoes means you aren't automatically considered nude by the Criminal Code of Canada. If you are wearing any item of clothing at all, then you must be "so clad as to offend against public decency" for your outfit to be ilegal. In the context of the Pride parade, mere nudity does not offend public decency, and is therefore not illegal.

The press ignores that last big for the most part. The hook that catches their attention is that shoes mean you aren't nude. And I guess that's good enough. At least the world knows now that there will be nudity at Toronto's Pride events in the future.

We hope this news will inspire other groups around the world to confront their own local legal systems and force them to acknowledge that nudity is not harmful, and is not indecent, and that being nude is a basic human right.

Here is a list of only some of the stories that have appeared:
